Education Assn, Inc. A word to Aestheticians, Electrologists & Cosmetologists seeking Laser Training: There is no "Certification" for laser operators performing these aesthetic procedures. Some state licensing organizations use the terminology of "national laser certification" but no such mandatory certification or certifying body exists. There is the National Council on Laser Excellence which provides for voluntary certification and standards for laser use. The question of how to get into doing laser procedures is more a question of career counseling than of any laser training. Each State's Medical Board determines who may perform what type of procedures - including aesthetic laser procedures. You have to check with each state to determine whether procedures such as hair removal or treatment of small lesions like spider veins and such may be treated by nonphysicians or nonnurses in your state. They may have special training or background requirements in different states. No laser training, either by us or any other group, will license or credential you to perform these procedures - unless the state has setup a specific provision for licensing. If you want to enter the field your best bet is to seek employment with a qualified medical professional. They have the authority to allow you to perform such procedures in their offices under their direct or indirect supervision (depending on state requirements). Once you have this authority then common practice, in order to comply with ANSI requirements, is to acquire the Laser Safety & Biophysics training, in addition to specific training in clinical or aesthetic procedures. This will all be accomplished in our 1 day seminars. Some states, which do not require direct supervision by a physician, will still require what they call "certification" of the laser operator. This is simply Certification of Training, which you will receive whenever you attend any of our laser programs. Please note the distinction however. It is not a Certification by and independent board, but rather a Certification of Training by the providing group. Essentially you or your attorney will have to research the requirements in your State. We've helped you begin by listing the agencies to contact in each State. You'll find them on our Resources & Links page by CLICKING HERE. An Aesthetic group has been advertising "Certification" and certification exams for aestheticians doing laser and dermabrasion procedures. Please note that any "Certification" this group offers is entirely from within their own private organization and does not imply licensing or any professionally accepted certification of any type. There is only one industry-wide nonprofit group that offers voluntary laser certification and examinations. Their information is available at www.LaserCertification.org . Our nonprofit Medical Education group serves as the secretariat for this National Council on Laser Excellence. If you would like the free laser training manual we use for our one day courses, click HERE. The Scientific Professional Society for lasers in medicine is the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery ( www.ASLMS.org ) . We would encourage you to attend their annual convention held in the spring of each year. Please note however that this society does not provide any type of credentialing or licensing. They do offer one day aesthetic laser courses immediately preceding their Scientific Meeting each year. As a final note, most of the laser manufacturers offer aesthetic laser training for their current and potential customers. You can find advertisements for these companies in most of the dermatology and aesthetic related journals, and at the national conventions. Gregory T. Absten |
