PHYSICIAN
LEVEL II - HANDS-ON "CREDENTIALING" QUALITY PROGRAMS

Description: Detailed Surgical/Medical training on ANY type of laser. These programs follow the guidelines for surgical laser training as suggested by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS). It teaches laser techniques utilized for procedures in specific applications. It includes clinical discussion of pathology, alternative and laser treatment, and hands-on laboratory sessions. The only additional requirement for Credentialing that is generally recommended, but not provided by this course, is a surgical preceptorship with a laser trained physician in that specialty. Such preceptorships can be offered for additional fees.

In addition to faculty for basic science and safety portions of the program, one physician instructor per specialty is provided for lectures and live laboratory instruction, per the recommendations of the ASLMS.

Registration for the laboratory training portion should be limited by total numbers and by specialty. Lecture attendance is limited only by the facility of the hospital.

*NOTE:  We conduct these programs under contract with hospitals or physician groups as in-house programs. Scheduled seminars for physician laser training are currently few and far between (aside from aesthetic laser use) but can be found occasionally. Check out the web site of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) to see if they have any such programs posted. You can go to our "Laser Training Institute" page and find a link to the ASLMS by scrolling down the page.

Suggested Outline: (may be tailored to the hospital's needs)

Inanimate and Animate Laboratory Sessions
All Faculty

A short laboratory video will be viewed by all participants at the beginning of the session to illustrate the concepts of power, power density, fluence, pulsing, fiber delivery, vaporization, incisions, and safety considerations. Concepts will be discussed for all lasers, though courses are oriented toward the specific types of lasers the hospital has available for use.

Live laboratory session will begin immediately preceding the laser orientation and inanimate exercises. Cadaver or other models appropriate to the specialty and procedure will be utilized.

Wet lab sessions will adjourn whenever physicians have practiced laser surgical techniques to their satisfaction, and have viewed the clinical video's of interest.

Since we teach on the hospital's / office's own laser equipment, it is up to the institution to ensure that the laser and accessory equipment is available and functional.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the course, the participant will:

  • Exhibit an understanding of the principles of laser biophysics and tissue interaction.
  • Increase their awareness and knowledge of laser use and application in their field of   specialization to include relative indications and absolute indications, contra-indications, and mechanisms of action.
  • Demonstrate their ability to operate the laser in an environment that is safe for patients and personnel.
  • Identify the administrative requirements including policies and safety practices that are required to be in compliance with ANSI 136.3 laser standards, in both private practice settings and institutions..
  • Discuss the various types of lasers and instrumentation available for use, and demonstrate their safe operation.
  • Demonstrate the manual dexterity skills, in inanimate, animal or cadaver laboratories, necessary to adequately and safely perform surgical techniques with the laser.
  • Identify developing areas of laser application.
